MSM President and Dean Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice Appointed to UnitedHealth Group Board of Directors

On Monday, August 7, Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) President and Dean Valerie Montgomery Rice, M.D., was one of two people named as new directors for UnitedHealth Group, one of the nation’s leading health and well-being companies. Sir Andrew Witty, Chancellor of the University of Nottingham, was also selected as a board member. UnitedHealth Group provides medical benefits to people in all 50 states and in more than 125 countries. The organization employs 260,000 people and 30,000 physicians and nurses.

A renowned infertility specialist and researcher, and chief administrator of a nationally recognized academic medical center, Montgomery Rice will provide valuable input in the direction of the organization.

“Dr. Montgomery Rice and Sir Andrew both have broad firsthand experience in health systems and research, the application of modern health care data and analytics, and each of them is a leading thinker on the future of health care,” said Richard Burke, chairman of the board of directors of UnitedHealth Group in the official release. “Dr. Montgomery Rice also brings us in-depth knowledge and understanding of the specific health care needs of a wide range of communities and how to better educate and enable the next generation of health care leaders to address them.”

In July, Dr. Montgomery Rice was also named a founding board member for the new Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine.
