Chairman Appointments

 

Janice Herbert-Carter, M.D., MGA, FACP
Dr. Herbert-Carter will serve as chairperson of the department of medical education. In this new role, she will provide leadership by working to advance the department as an academically-intensive entity whose faculty will direct and teach multidisciplinary courses, expanding interdisciplinary education in the M.D. program while collaborating with other MSM educational initiatives; and providing leadership and oversight of publishing student success / outcomes concerning M.D. and other academic programs.

 

She will continue in her role as associate professor of medical education and associate professor of family medicine. In these roles, she teaches 2nd year medical students Pathophysiology, facilitates small group clinical correlations sessions for 1st year medical students, and teaches in Fundamentals of Medicine 1, 2, and 3, as well as the Master of Science in Medical Science (MSMS) program. She is a clinical preceptor and didactic teacher for Family Medicine residents and students in the Comprehensive Family Healthcare Center. She teaches in the National Center for Primary Care Faculty Development Program, helping other faculty improve their teaching, curriculum development, and academic medicine leadership skills.

 

Dr. Herbert-Carter has published articles and abstracts in various journals, as well as presented abstracts, workshops, and posters at many national meetings, including the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine, Society of General Internal Medicine, American Association of Blacks in Higher Education, National Medical Association, and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). She has worked with the National Board of Medical Examiners in various capacities, including as an item-writer for the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Steps 1 and 2.

Winston E. Thompson, Ph.D.


Dr. Thompson will serve as chairperson of the department of physiology. In this new role, he will be the primary spokesperson for department faculty, staff, and students. He will represent the central administration to department members and at the same time articulate the needs of the department members to the administration. Under his leadership, the department of physiology will serve as a model for effectiveness in fostering balanced and focused growth as the means to achieving sustainable academic excellence in teaching, research and service.


Prior to this appointment, Dr. Thompson was professor and director of research in the department of obstetrics
and gynecology. He also served as director of the Research Centers in Minority Institutions Program G12
Multidisciplinary Biomedical Research Center Mentoring Academy Program. He is a well-trained reproductive physiologist in in vivo and in vitro studies on the ontogeny, physiology,biochemistry and molecular aspect of ovarian biology. While trained as an embryologist at the world renowned Marine Biological Laboratories in Massachusetts, Dr. Thompson also has extensive practical
experience in viral technologies for force expression and vector base gene silencing, gene expression analysis both at the transcriptional and translational levels as well as in protein-protein interactions and general molecular biology technologies.


Dr. Thompson is a highly-respected National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded (R01 and U01) basic science investigator in the field of women reproductive health and infertility. He is a seasoned scientist who has directed multidisciplinary, multi-investigator research teams and has a strong track record of establishing effective inter-institutional partnerships. Since 1997, his research has continuously been funded by various agencies like NIH, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, National Center for Research Resources, and the Department of Defense.

Yasmin Tyler-Hill, M.D.


Dr. Tyler-Hill will serve as chairperson of the department of pediatrics (DOP). In this new role, she will build MSM’s mission to increase the number of primary care pediatricians in Georgia through expansion of our community residency program, leverage expertise of the department’s faculty to improve health equity for all children through strategic alignment with community partners and health services research, and establish the DOP as a statewide resource on the health and well-being of Georgia’s children. Specifically, she will collaborate with partners to build a recognized department of developmental and behavioral pediatrics and enhance programs in community and general pediatrics, adolescent medicine, and the care and transition of care of children with hemoglobinopathies.


She most recently served as the interim chairperson for the department of pediatrics. Since she joined MSM in 2001, she developed the curriculum on professionalism and quality improvement; reestablished the Continuity Clinic; improved and established relationships with community partners; and under her leadership, pediatrics remains one of the most competitive and highly sought-after programs for prospective residents.


In addition to her MSM appointments, Dr. Tyler-Hill serves as the medical director for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) at Hughes Spalding. She is past-president of the medical staff and serves on the Children’s Medical Executive Committee. She also is a board member the Georgia chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Georgia Pediatric Health Improvement Collaborative (as an inaugural member), the Medical Home Task Force in conjunction with CHOA, the advisory board for the System of Care Anne E. Casey Foundation, and the Metro Atlanta YMCA board of directors. Most recently, Dr. Tyler Hill was named to the board of directors of the newly formed pediatric-focused, clinically integrated network.

Lawrence Wineski, Ph.D.


Dr. Wineski will serve as chairperson of the department of pathology and anatomy. In this new role, he will focus on further advancing the department as an academically intensive and innovative unit which will contribute significantly to the educational, research, and clinical initiatives of MSM. He is also the director of the anatomy teaching laboratories, course director for the Organ Systems 1 course in the first-year medical curriculum, and subject director for gross anatomy and embryology for the first-year medical curriculum.

Dr. Wineski received a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from California State University at Fullerton, a master’s degree in biological sciences from San Francisco State University, and a doctorate in anatomy from the University of Illinois at the Medical Center, Chicago. Additionally, he held postdoctoral research positions at the State University of Groningen in the Netherlands, the University of Michigan, and the University of Illinois at Chicago.


He began his academic career as a lecturer and instructor in biology at San Francisco State University in 1972, later holding similar roles in various institutions, including the San Francisco Zoo, University of Illinois at the Medical Center, and Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine. Dr. Wineski joined MSM in 1983 as an assistant professor in what was then the department of anatomy and has held roles of increasing responsibility in the same department for 30 years.

 


He has received numerous awards and honors such as Who’s Who in Medical Sciences Education,Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the World, as well as MSM’s Dean’s Outstanding Teaching Award for Achievement in Teaching (2012) and Faculty Appreciation Award from the MD Class of 2017 (2014). He is a member of various professional societies such as the American Association of Anatomists and the International Association of Medical Science Educators. Throughout his career, Dr. Wineski has been a guest lecturer and adjunct faculty member at various colleges and universities; developed courses; written numerous journal articles, manuscripts, books, book chapters and book reviews; and secured prestigious research grants from the National Institutes of Health.
