MSM Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences invites 50 Tri-Cities High School students to MSM for Mental Health Awareness Month

This is a closed event and only for high school students.

 

Morehouse School of Medicine's (MSM) Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, in recognition of May's Health Awareness Month has invited 50 Tri-Cities High School students to join them Friday, May 1st at MSM to learn and discuss Adolescent Mental Health. The Department of Psychiatry has joined with American Psychiatric Association/Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Minority Fellowship (APA/SAMHSA) to sponsor this event.

 

Throughout the course of the day Tri Cities High School students will participate in lectures and discussions with MSM affiliated physicians from the psychiatry, pediatrics, and public health departments addressing topics that are pertinent to adolescents and their mental health.  

 

Students will participate in the following discussion topics:

  • > An Introduction to Mental Health- Myths vs Facts
  • > Stressors among LGBTQ youth
  • > Depression and Self-Injurious Behavior
  • > Stress vs Anxiety
  • > Substance Abuse
  • > Bullying
  • > Relationships (Healthy vs Unhealthy), STDs, and safe sex
  • > Healthy Eating and Exercise

 

Students will also participate in a interactive mentor/mentee luncheon in which they will interact medical student and resident to ask questions.
