Morehouse School of Medicine Celebrates Field Day with E.L. Connally Elementary School

May 21, 2015 - Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) President and Dean Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice has made a commitment to adopt E.L. Connally Elementary and to establish a sustainable relationship between E. L. Connally and MSM. The overall objective of Field Day was to celebrate the end of the school year by engaging students in a day filled with physical activities, reward students for a job well done as well as build and strengthen community relationships with E.L. Connally Elementary School.

In the morning, from 9:00 am - Noon, students participated in a variety of physical activities and obstacle courses that consisted of a 3-legged race, potato sack race, egg/ball paddle race, hoop relays, beach volleyball, and tug of war.  Also, face painting, moon bounce, and snow cone stations were available. All students were given a Field Day t-shirt, water bottle, and certificate of participation. Our community sponsors provided giveaways, as well as free and/or discounted admission tickets to local attractions for the students.

After students had lunch and cooled down a little, an awards ceremony was held in the auditorium from 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm. Outstanding students received certificates and a gift provided by sponsors for their behavior, academic performance, and continued success throughout the school year.  Students conducted teacher superlatives and had the opportunity to vote on the funniest and coolest teachers. Selected teachers were awarded a certificate and trophy.

Lastly, Ms. Pickett, principal of E.L. Connally Elementary School, was recognized for her years of service and dedication.  She was presented with a lovely blown glass statue, farewell video, and a check for $5,000.00 on behalf of MSM to be used for the development of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) initiatives at Connally.

MSM will continue to support E. L. Connally through mentoring, curriculum development in support of STEAM, and professional development as well as mutually agreed upon initiatives. MSM has previously sponsored care packages for every student as well as sponsored Career Day, holiday gifts, donation of laboratory equipment and tablets for educational use.

MSM is committed to making a positive impact on the children at E. L. Connally Elementary. Students, faculty and administrators at E.L. Connally enjoyed a day of activities and interaction with MSM staff and were thrilled to celebrate the end of the academic year. The MSM Employee Council (MEC) planned and executed the Field Day event in partnership with the faculty and staff at E. L. Connally Elementary.

The E.L. Connally Field Day event was sponsored by The Children's Museum of Atlanta, Color Reflections, Georgia Department of Transportation, High Museum of Art, Hot 107.9, and Morehouse School of Medicine.
