Atlanta - Cutting-edge developments and improved outcomes in health care delivery will be the focus of the 2008 HeLa Women's Health Conference at Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM).
The conference is designed for the obstetrician-gynecologist in the practice of this specialty as well as residents and students in training, perinatal health care delivery personnel, reproductive health and environmental health specialists as well as social scientists, health policy officials and community reproductive health activists.
The objective of bringing together leading experts in new and existing areas of medicine will permit attendants to interact between health policy leaders, Ob/Gyn and primary care specialists to affect improved outcomes in healthcare delivery.
"This year's conference will address mutations in Mitochondrial DNA in perinatal medicine leading to autism as well as Mitochondrial dysfunction leading to ovarian cancer, "said Professor of MSM's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and HeLa Conference Chair Roland Pattillo, M.D. "These cutting-edge developments focus on new findings that the Mitochondria, the "energy factory" of every cell in the body may be disrupted in autism and cancer leading to disease at both ends of the spectrum of pregnancy and cancer."

CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of the conference, the participants should be able to:
- Better understand birth defects, teratognesis and gene environmental interactions;
- Be aware of major environmental toxic substances and their affects on reproductive health;
- Understand HPV Exposure and changes in pregnancy;
- Be aware of ultrasound and other diagnostic applications to pregnancy monitoring for detection of fetal abnormalities;
- Determine HPV diagnostic and treatment recommendations
CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION
MSM is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME)
to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians. MSM designates this continuing
education activity up to 6.0 credit hours in Category 1 of the Physician's Recognition
Award of the American Medical Association.
