Women With Heart 2015

A wonderful week to kick off the New Year at MSM

What would it mean to you if a friend, co-worker or family member avoided a stroke or heart attack? Armed with information, Women With Heart at MSM has served to intervene in the lives many - fathers, mothers, sisters and brothers - who have people depending on them.

Under the leadership of former MSM First Lady Mrs. Eilene Maupin, Women With Heart was established in 2009 as a volunteer support organization of Morehouse School of Medicine, dedicated to raising student scholarship funds and promoting healthy lifestyles. The Cola-Cola Company has been a presenting partner for the past two years and was joined this year by 755 Restaurant Corporation; Ambassador Andrew & Carolyn Young; Bank of America; The Chick-fil-A Foundation; Cigna Healthcare; Delta Air Lines; Georgia-Pacific Corporation; Hank & Billy Aaron; Lord Aeck Sargent; Publix Supermarkets; Regions Bank; The Ritz Carlton Atlanta; and Wells Fargo Bank.

Women With Heart Week

The week’s activities featured the Healthy Heart Men’s Breakfast educational session on Tuesday, February 3; the annual women’s luncheon on Wednesday, February 4; health screenings for senior citizens from the Atlanta metro area on Thursday, February 5; and, “Wear Red Day” on Friday, February 6. This signature scholarship fundraising event has helped to reduce medical education debt, allowing MSM students the freedom to pursue careers in one of the primary care fields of medicine and practice in underserved communities. Over the past six years, WWH, in partnership with the Office of Institutional Advancement and Marketing and Communications, has raised over $1,075,000 benefitting 45 MSM students.

• February 3, 2015 - Healthy Heart Men’s Breakfast

The annual Healthy Heart Men’s Breakfast has featured some of the foremost doctors in the country who address the issues of heart disease and its prevention. On Tuesday, February 3, 2015, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., in the Louis W. Sullivan National Center for Primary Care Atrium at Morehouse School of Medicine, WWH welcomed our very own Director of MSM’s Cardiovascular Research Institute, Dr. Herman Taylor, a nationally-recognized cardiologist with broad experience and success in key areas including invasive practice/research. WXIA-Atlanta’s 11 Alive Evening Anchor DeMarco Morgan served as the Mater of Ceremony, with Ernie Hines on hand to share his real life experience as a heart attack survivor before an audience of over 200 guests, faculty and students.

• February 4, 2015 - Women’s Luncheon

Nearly 400 attendees were on hand at the Marriott Marquis Wednesday, February 4th, for the Women’s Luncheon keynote address by Dr. Kimberli Taylor Clark, an Assistant Professor at North Texas Healthcare Systems and UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Taylor spoke about her personal experience with hear disease and special interest in health disparities with a focus on eliminating cardiovascular disease in minorities and women. WXIA-Atlanta’s 11 Alive Reporter and luncheon mistress of ceremonies Blayne Alexander introduced Piper Burks, Earline Harris and Tamika Youngblood as they shared their personal encounters with the cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, the #1 killers of African Americans.

• February 5-6, 2015 – Health Fair Screening and National Wear Red Day

Before concluding the week on Friday with National Wear Red Day, local senior citizens were brought to MSM’s campus for WWH Health Screening Day. In addition to receiving a free heart health assessment, seniors and community residents were treated to refreshments and information on maintaining a healthy heart and lifestyle.
