This summer, Morehouse School of Medicine student Karima MuhammadPoe spent two months at the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, fully immersed in the field of dermatology. Her schedule blended clinical, research and educational experiences — two days each week in the Yale Dermatology clinic, Fridays assisting with surgeries at the VA Hospital, dedicated time for research and attending grand rounds alongside attendings and residents. Outside of her professional commitments, Karima enjoyed exploring the walkable streets of downtown New Haven and taking weekend train rides to New York City.

Karima’s research focused on the association between autoimmune diseases and nail dystrophy — an often-overlooked connection in both general medicine and dermatology. Nail conditions, though sometimes considered cosmetic, can have a significant impact on quality of life. Understanding their causes can lead to improved care and treatment, and the work deepened her interest in autoimmune diseases, a field still in need of further study.

The program, hosted by Yale’s Office of Collaborative Excellence and Student Engagement, was led by Ms. Aja Diggs and Ms. Linda Johnson, who ensured participants had both meaningful and enjoyable experiences. Beyond the clinical and research components, Karima took part in workshops on topics such as imposter syndrome, Step 1 preparation, and how to create effective research posters and oral presentations. Weekly “Breakfasts with the Dean,” hosted by Deans Vazquez and Latimore encouraged open discussions about key issues in medicine and the profession’s evolving challenges. karima yale group shot

The experience concluded with research poster presentations and oral sessions before peers, program deans, mentors and Yale faculty — a moment that showcased months of dedication and collaboration.

One of the highlights for Karima was sharing this journey with four fellow Morehouse School of Medicine classmates. Their support and shared passion for medicine made the experience even more meaningful.

Karima’s summer at Yale was more than a professional milestone — it was a season of growth, collaboration and inspiration that will continue to shape her journey toward becoming a physician.
