MSBT Student Ariana Williams Selected as APHL–CDC Fellow

ariana williams headshotFor Ariana Williams, a dedicated student in Morehouse School of Medicine’s Master of Science in Biotechnology (MSBT) program, the path to public health has always been fueled by a deep commitment to science and community. When she learned she was selected as an approved candidate for the prestigious Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL)–CDC Fellowship, it wasn’t just a career milestone—it was a powerful validation of her purpose.

“I feel deeply honored to be one of the few applicants chosen for this opportunity,” Ariana reflects. “This fellowship is a chance to sharpen my laboratory skills, work alongside experienced mentors and contribute directly to advancing population health.”

The APHL–CDC Fellowship places candidates like Ariana in state or federal public health laboratories, where they collaborate on high-impact projects focused on detecting and responding to health threats. For Ariana, this hands-on experience means more than technical growth — it’s an opportunity to develop leadership skills and influence public health practices.

As a Black woman in STEM, Ariana understands the importance of representation in science and public health. “I hope to bring perspectives that reflect statistically less prevalent communities and ensure our research and policies are collaborative and driven towards comprehensive excellence,” she says. This fellowship, she believes, is a platform to amplify those voices.

The Association of Public Health Laboratories, which represents governmental health labs nationwide, plays a crucial role in safeguarding public health by monitoring and responding to threats. Ariana’s selection is a testament to her potential to contribute meaningfully to this mission.

Her journey is a reminder that behind every laboratory test and surveillance report is a passionate individual dedicated to protecting and improving community health. We’re proud to support Ariana as she takes this exciting next step toward becoming a leader in public health.
