The Public Health Summer Fellows Program is designed to introduce and expose minority students (African-American, Native American, Latino and Asian/Pacific Islanders) to the field of Public Health. The goal of the program is to encourage fellows to pursue graduate education in Public Health. This distinguished program was founded in 1987 from a collaboration of Morehouse School of Medicine, Emory University Rollins School of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This collaboration provides students with a unique opportunity in developing new skills and knowledge.
The program is located in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia, the home of all three institutions.
Program Outline
The Public Health Summer Fellows Program is an academically rigorous and intensive eight (8) week summer program for underrepresented minority rising junior and senior undergraduate students. Students will experience first-hand the excitement, relevance and promise of careers in Public Health. The program's focus includes:
- Principles of Epidemiology
- Disease Surveillance/Investigation
- Community-Based Public Health Research
The program commences with a one-week course to provide students with a foundation in the principles of epidemiological research. The program then combines this academic knowledge with direct hands-on field experience. Using the combined resources of program sponsors and collaborators, students are placed in community-based public health research internships. During this six-week internship, participants work with mentors who are at the forefront of researching some of the nation's priority health issues. Students will participate in weekly seminars and learn how to analyze important health policy issues and to conduct epidemiologic research.
This comprehensive curriculum prepares an increasing number of minority populations. During the final week of the program, fellows participate in a symposium and provide oral presentations on their research experience.

Selection Criteria
Applicants must be U.S. citizens and enrolled as rising junior or senior undergraduate students or have received an undergraduate degree within a six-month period prior to application deadline. Applicants must be of African-American, Native American, Latino, or Asian/Pacific Islander descent.
Student selection is based on a combination of:
- GPA
- Statement of Interest (student essay)
- Recommendations
- Leadership ability and skill
Stipend
Participants will receive a stipend of $2,000 upon completion of the program. Housing, meals, local public transportation costs, and travel to and from Atlanta are provided.
