The Infectious Diseases Section of the Department of Medicine at Morehouse School of Medicine provides services for the care of outpatients and inpatients with infectious disease (ID) problems. Our mission is to provide consultations for clinical care, assist in training medical students and residents, and undertake cutting-edge clinical and laboratory research.

Dr. Stringer and Mesfin Fransua, MD, the two members of the Section (both full-time), serve as ID consultants for the Morehouse School of Medicine Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Obstetrics/Gynecology Services at Grady Memorial Hospital (GMH in downtown Atlanta. They also follow outpatients living with HIV infection and AIDS in the Grady/Morehouse ID Clinic, founded in 1993, which is located in the Clinic Building on the main GMH campus. Drs. Stringer and Fransua also see outpatients, including those living with HIV/AIDS, at Morehouse Medical Associates-Piedmont, which serves as one of the clinical sites for Morehouse Medical Associates (MMA), the Morehouse School of Medicine faculty group practice; like Grady Hospital, MMA-Piedmont is located in downtown Atlanta.

Women living with HIV/AIDS who are seen at MMA-Piedmont or the Grady/Morehouse ID Clinic are followed by Ms. Linda Womack, a social worker who is part of the Morehouse School of Medicine People Advocating Disease Prevention (PADP) program. Jalal Zuberi, MD, serves as director of the PADP program, which is part of the Department of Pediatrics and is supported by funding authorized by Title IV of the federal Ryan White Care Act (RWCA).

Nurse practitioner Hermeyone Hunter, MS, FNP-C, AACRN, an MMA staff member, follows patients with early (i.e., pre-AIDS) HIV infection in the RWCA-Title-I-funded Joye Bradley Health Services Clinic at AID Atlanta, Inc., where she is part of a multi-disciplinary patient care team which includes, as clinic co- medical directors, Drs. Stringer and Fransua. AID Atlanta, Inc., based in midtown Atlanta, is the largest AIDS service organization in the southeastern United States.

Research efforts of the Section include those spearheaded by Dr. Fransua to develop the electronic Morehouse School of Medicine HIV Registry Database, a resource that will permit Morehouse School of Medicine HIV researchers, including Drs. Fransua and Stringer, to plan future clinical studies based on anonymous, aggregate clinical data from patients seen at Grady/Morehouse ID Clinic, MMA-Piedmont, and AID Atlanta who have given written, informed consent to participate in the database project. This project is funded by the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NCMHD) through the NCMHD program award supporting the Center of Excellence on Health Disparities (COEHD) at Morehouse School of Medicine , for which David Satcher, MD, PhD, Director of the National Center for Primary Care at Morehouse School of Medicine and former United States Surgeon General, serves as principal investigator. Drs. Stringer and Fransua also actively participate in the activities of the multidisciplinary Morehouse School of Medicine HIV/AIDS Research Group.
