The Renal Section of the Department of Medicine provides Consultative Services to all departments at the Morehouse School of Medicine and to other private physicians in the community. Outpatient Services are provided both at the Renal Clinic at the Grady Hospital and at the faculty practice office at 75 Piedmont Avenue, Suite 700. Inpatient Services are provided at both Grady Hospital and other private Hospitals in the downtown Atlanta area. Consultative Services involve complex fluid, electrolytes, acid-base disorders, difficult hypertension, acute and chronic kidney diseases and renal replacement therapies.

The Section has two full-time faculty members: Chamberlain I. Obialo, M.D., FASN, and Khalid Bashir, M.D. and four part-time faculty with adjunct appointments: William Cleveland, M.D.; Angus Howard, M.D.; Michel Brathwaite, M.D. and Yvelline Jean-Claude, M.D. Faculty members also serve as Dialysis Medical Directors at several free standing Dialysis Clinics in the Atlanta Metropolis.

Various Research activities are undertaken by the Section at both the Dialysis clinics, Outpatient clinics, and at the [CRC] on the main campus of the School. Most of the research work involves Clinical Nephrology in the areas of hypertension, progression of chronic kidney disease, dialysis vascular access, dialysis outcomes and Cardio-Renal Syndromes. Translational research involves collaboration with other sections and departments on various industry supported or NIH funded projects: NCRR-RCMI, #5P20RR11104; NIH CRC #1P20-RR 11104-04-R C R11; # 5P20MD00272 - Health Disparities Center.
